At our Red Tent Event, many women shared their Pregnancy Loss experiences. It can be difficult to grieve, particularly when few even knew that you were expecting. We would like to create a forum for women to share their stories, as well as learn how we can appropriately offer support to women currently facing a miscarriage.

There will also be time to discuss any topics or questions that are on your mind.

Our next meeting is Weds, 1/18/12.

NJ remains the highest C-Section rate in the nation: 39.4%! So, we owe it to all women and babies to be informed.

Monmouth International Cesarean Awareness Network Leader, Kate Schorr joins us to discuss making a necessary cesarean as family centered as possible. What can you do to help foster mother-baby bonding, breastfeeding? How can we leave mom feeling less traumatized by the birth than those who are whisked into the OR and treated according to hospital protocols? She will also discuss how to reduce your risk of having a c-section.

First birth cesarean 2008, second an unmedicated hospital vbac 2009
Started the Monmouth County chapter of ICAN in the summer of 2010 because ICAN provided her so much information and support and made her vbac (vaginal birth after c/s) possible - wanted to do that for the women of this area
Attended the ICAN conference in St. Louis in April 2011

November 16th Meeting: Cord Clamping & Newborn Procedures

She began studying herbal medicine 20 years ago with David Winston at his School of Botanical Medicine, and in 1998 with 7Song at the Northeast School of Botanical Medicine. Eryka Andrex will be joining us to share her Belly Dance and Hula Hooping Skills! Eryka has taught mini-sessions of Belly Dancing at our Red Tent Events and we assure you, she makes it fun and easy--even if you are dancing in your third trimester.

*Gentle but effective exercise safe for pregnancy, postpartum, breastfeeding, etc.

Eryka will also be bringing hula hoops! I was never able to hula hoop with the lightweight toy hoops of my youth....Eryka makes her own hoops for her classes that are larger (proportioned for adults) and of varying weights. With the right hoop, I was able to learn how to keep it up by the end of my first session!

Fortunately, my children (9 & 4) also love to hoop, and the baby loves to watch--making it fun and doable for the whole family!

There will be hoops available for order or purchase.
*Please note: Hula Hooping is only postpartum/non-pregnancy exercise!

Fertility Awareness Method, August 17, 2011

At our next meeting, we will learn about Fertility Signs and how to track them in order to conceive or avoid conception.

If you are interested in becoming pregnant, learn to read your body's cues and identify your peak 24 hours of fertility.

If you are interested in birth control, know that you only need to use barrier methods for approximately 30% of your monthly cycle. And, according to www.tcoyf.com, this technique (if used correctly) has a failure rate of approximately 2%. ("This is considered lower than any other barrier method, expect the condom--which is also 2%.")

This information is so helpful and empowering for women at all stages of life.

Our next meeting is Weds. November 17, 2010. Beverly Benedetto, RYT, BA will help us:

· Learn easy breathing techniques to help you relax through out your pregnancy, during labor and post-labor

· Standing poses that you can do anywhere during all stages of pre-post pregnancy

· Floor poses that can be done during all stages of pregnancy

· Learn the best pose for overall relaxation and reduce swelling

Wear comfortable clothing and bring a mat or beach towel. Try not to eat for an hour before the workshop. Questions gladly answered after the mini-session.

Beverly received her 200 hour yoga teacher training In 2007. Became certified to teach pre-natal yoga by Yoga Works in NYC and is also certified to teach mat Pilates. She also holds a B.A in Education from Georgian Court University.

Beverly Has taught all levels of yoga from beginners to power, to hot, to vinyasa, to prenatal and currently teaches in Brielle and Wall. She developed a kids yoga program for 3-5 year olds, as well as a yoga for fertility workshop that incorporates yoga, mediation and sharing.

Attended workshops with Doug Swenson (Ashtanga), Gurmukh (Kundalini), Shiva Rea (Trance Dance), and Lillias Folan (Yoga over 50), Angela Farmer, and Stephen Cope.
Is a new mom to daughter Gianna, 8 months.

We'll be discussing the effects of stress and crying on newborns through toddlers, inspired by our favorite neuroscientist: Dr. Nils Bergman. (You may recognize his name from his innovative research and advocacy for Kangaroo Mother Care for premies.)

*Why do some babies react differently to stress than others?

*Being the best mother you can be--how to take care of yourself while responding to your children's needs.

Dawn Maghan, Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner will be introducing you to the world’s most complete holistic medicine: Ayurveda. She will help you learn your own unique constitution and show you ways to maintain health and balance with this knowledge. The Ayurvedic approach to pre and post natal care will also be discussed.

Not sure what Ayurveda is? It is the more than 5000 year old traditional medicine of India, and the oldest continually practiced medicine in the world. Literally translated, it means “The Science of Life," and is the sister science of yoga. Ayurvedic approach treats each individual as a whole person, taking into account unique psychological, emotional, and physical conditions. Ayurveda maintains that by knowing your constitution and working with rhythms and cycles of nature, health and wellbeing can be achieved.

Dawn is a mother of three children, all born at home in water. She has been teaching yoga in the shore area for over a decade and is also a Reiki Master/Teacher. Her passion is maintaining health holistically and educating others of benefits of a holistic lifestyle.

Our next meeting will be Weds, 12/16/09. We'll be discussing WORK/SEPARATION FROM BABY. It can be tough to be away from our babies, but sometimes life (or our sanity) require it. So, how do we ease this transition for ourselves and our babies? What can breastfeeding mamas do to maintain their milk supply? If you've been through it, come share your experiences with our group!

We'll also be having a FREE-CYCLE. Bring your unwanted maternity, baby, or totally unrelated items to the meeting and pass them on so they can be re-used. This is the perfect time of year to de-clutter! Whatever isn't taken at the meeting will be donated to charity.

September Blessing Way + Henna

Our next meeting is Sept. 16, 2009. We'll be exploring Blessing Ways and Henna. A Blessing Way is traditionally a Native American Ceremony that honors a woman's transition into motherhood. An alternative to a 'Baby Shower,' this rite of passage focuses on supporting the mother-to-be and allowing her a safe place to express and release any fears or concerns while receiving love and support from other women.

Henna (a plant-based temporary tatto originating from Middle East) is often used at a Blessing Ways, and we'll have plenty of Henna on hand for mamas who would like to try it or get it.

Babies are aware and able to respond. However, babies and children are not treated in our society as if they function on the same level as adults. Actually they are probably more aware than adults. Babies understand if they are wanted or not, they feel fear, rejection, and all this affects how their brains develop and their sense of self-esteem. We all have our own births to work through as well. If babies experience some problem or separation during the birth, they will tell you their story if you are open to it.

As always, we welcome all babies and mamas. We love to hear birth stories and help you find answers to your questions. Hope to see you at the next meeting!

Our own, Dr. Kate Engelhardt will be sharing her expertise on Chiropractic care during pregnancy.
