Navigating Postpartum (3/21/12)

Postpartum is an area of life where our culture has dropped the ball. Most new mamas are unprepared for the sleep deprivation, hormonal shifts, and demands of newborn care while their own bodies are in recovery.

Beth Salerno, Dar a Luz Leader, will be sharing her expertise as a Certified Postpartum Doula and mother of three.

We'll map out typical Postpartum Pitfalls and discuss how to bypass or overcome them. This is a great topic for your partner, mother or mother-in-law--anyone who will be helping you after the baby.

As always, our meetings are FREE and all women, babies and children are welcome. (& for some topics, like this one, we extend the invite to partners and dads, too!)

After years of caring for babies and children, it was my own Postpartum shock that inspired my training as Doula. There was such a disconnect between what I desperately needed and what I received. My baby was depending on me for round-the-clock feeding and care, and I didn't know how to ask for help.

Nine years later, my doula work often feels like that of a Sherpa. I carry my own brand of gear and oxygen (wraps and baby carriers, food and drink for mamas, and usually several loads of laundry).

February 15 Meeting

At our Red Tent Event, many women shared their Pregnancy Loss experiences. It can be difficult to grieve, particularly when few even knew that you were expecting. We would like to create a forum for women to share their stories, as well as learn how we can appropriately offer support to women currently facing a miscarriage.

There will also be time to discuss any topics or questions that are on your mind.

As always, our meetings are FREE and all women, babies and children are welcome.

January 18th Meeting: ICAN Leader, Kate Schorr

Our next meeting is Weds, 1/18/12.

NJ remains the highest C-Section rate in the nation: 39.4%! So, we owe it to all women and babies to be informed.

Monmouth International Cesarean Awareness Network Leader, Kate Schorr joins us to discuss making a necessary cesarean as family centered as possible. What can you do to help foster mother-baby bonding, breastfeeding? How can we leave mom feeling less traumatized by the birth than those who are whisked into the OR and treated according to hospital protocols? She will also discuss how to reduce your risk of having a c-section.

Kate Schorr is a mother of 2 girls
First birth cesarean 2008, second an unmedicated hospital vbac 2009
Started the Monmouth County chapter of ICAN in the summer of 2010 because ICAN provided her so much information and support and made her vbac (vaginal birth after c/s) possible - wanted to do that for the women of this area
Attended the ICAN conference in St. Louis in April 2011
